Kimberley May, a junior at Providence and a two-time NCAA Division 1 cross country finalist along with being a qualifier for the 1,500-meter semifinals in June at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the Friars competing Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational presented by Under Armour at the Thomas Zimmer Championship course in Madison. May reflects on opening her season with a victory Sept. 8 in the 4-kilometer race in 13:56.2 at the Friar Invitational, in addition to placing 10th in the 5-kilometer competition Sept. 23 at the Virginia Invitational on the Panorama Farms course, also the site Nov. 18 of the Division 1 championship meet. She examines how valuable it was for freshmen Reese Fahys and Cara Laverty to gain experience racing in Virginia ahead of not only Nuttycombe, but the postseason. May also explains the confidence she gained from such a strong performance in Virginia, and how she enjoys the venue as a championship course after the challenge of competing last season at the NCAA final at Oklahoma State in Stillwater. She revisits her past two experiences competing at Nuttycombe, including a 20:57.3 on the 6-kilometer layout last season and the lessons learned in order to benefit May and her teammates this year. May also shares her excitement for Providence being able to compete with a full lineup for the first time this season at Nuttycombe after multiple teammates had longer track seasons that extended well into the summer that resulted in a later start with cross country training. She speaks about how valuable it was to be able to stay in Rhode Island during the summer instead of returning home to New Zealand and expresses gratitude for her teammates and training partners that supported and uplifted her during workouts. May also reminisces about how meaningful it was to have her parents able to watch her compete in person at the Division 1 championship meet in Texas and how valuable it was to have them visiting in the United States for a month during the summer. She highlights how enjoyable it is to have several teammates from New Zealand, including Kiera Hall and Tessa Hunt, and how impactful the connection that Providence coach Ray Treacy has with New Zealand athletes was in her decision to join the Friars' program. May also recaps the most significant moment in her Providence career of joining Alex O'Neill, Jane Buckley and Shannon Flockhart in winning the women's 4x1,500-meter relay in 17:11.35 at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in April, with the Friars elevating to the No. 4 program in collegiate history.
